Description: James Cook Ayer began selling his medicines locally in Lowell Mass where he owned a drugstore in 1843. The Sarsaparilla medicine was first bottled in 1857. Ayer claimed he was a graduate of Penn State University, however there is no record of him receiving a degree from here. Ayer became a very wealthy man helping to finance the railroad from Boston to Lowell, and retired a multi millionaire by 1870. American c. 1850’s, rectangular, double applied collar, pontiled.
